CSU Chico MSTI

CSU Chico’s MSTI project has enhanced a strong partnership between the School of Education This link will take you to an external website in a new tab. and the College of Natural Sciences This link will take you to an external website in a new tab..  Faculty from both colleges work together to develop and implement new recruitment strategies for increasing the number of math and science teachers. CSU Chico has developed a Hands-On Science Laboratory (HOL) This link will take you to an external website in a new tab., which provides engaging, active learning experiences conducting chemistry, biology, and physical science experiments for visiting local classes of K-12 students.

The NSTA Student Chapter This link will take you to an external website in a new tab. is a newly created science teaching club within the College of Natural Sciences.  This group has given students from all science disciplines a place to explore teaching careers at an early stage in their undergraduate careers, and to more easily make a transition toward that goal.

Project M.A.T.H This link will take you to an external website in a new tab. (Mathematics And Teaching on the Horizon) is a cohort learning community model for undergraduates preparing to become future mathematics teachers. It incorporates early field experiences at area schools, peer tutoring, bi-weekly seminars that include master 6-12 grade teachers, and assignment to a faculty advisor as well as a master teacher starting in the freshman year.  During their senior year, participants also have the opportunity to team-teach using reform curriculum under faculty supervision to assist incoming freshman who have not successfully completed the CSU ELM (Entry Level Math) requirement to achieve necessary math proficiency.

The CSU Chico MSTI program coordinates efforts with other campus programs such as the Teacher Recruitment Project and the NSF Robert Noyce Scholarship program and has recently provided funds for scholarships for future math and science teachers averaging in excess of $100,000 annually.
